It is often described as the law that keeps citizens in the know about their government. Federal agencies are required to disclose any information requested under the FOIA unless it falls under one of nine <span tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Click to define\" data-term=\"exemptions\">exemptions<\/span> which protect interests such as personal privacy, national security, and law enforcement. So what does Virginia say about FOIA Request? First lets see what the Federal law states.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The FOIA provides that when processing requests, agencies should withhold information <strong>only if they reasonably foresee<\/strong> that disclosure would harm an interest protected by an exemption, or if disclosure is prohibited by law. Agencies should also consider whether partial disclosure of information is possible whenever they determine that full disclosure is not possible and they should take reasonable steps to segregate and release nonexempt information. The Office of Information Policy at the Department of Justice is responsible for issuing government-wide guidance on the FOIA as part of its responsibilities to encourage all agencies to fully comply with both the letter and the spirit of the FOIA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The FOIA also requires agencies to proactively post online certain categories of information, including frequently requested records. It stands for Virginia Freedom of Information Act. <\/span><span class=\"ILfuVd\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hgKElc\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), located at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/law.lis.virginia.gov\/vacodepopularnames\/virginia-freedom-of-information-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a7<\/span> <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">2.2-3700 et seq. of the Code of Virginia<\/span><\/a>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">guarantees citizens of the Commonwealth and representatives of the media access to <strong>public records held by public bodies, public officials, and public employees<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since 1967, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) has provided the public the right to request access to records from any federal agency.
